Project: Peanut Sheller

Since 2003, the Full Belly Project has been designing and bringing to market income-generating agricultural devices to improve life in rural communities. Their flagship product, the Universal Peanut Sheller, can shell 100 peanuts an hour - a task that otherwise takes 5 people a full day. The Universal Nut Sheller is sold as a kit whose components are replicable using locally-available materials.

In 2009, through the generosity of its donors, Elavagnon was able to purchase a Universal Nut Sheller kit for the women of Houedogli. Despite the persistent high cost of materials and the difficulty of transporting the shellers to market, multiple women's groups have built and begun using the shellers.

The Universal Nut Sheller is used by the members of the women's groups for their own benefit, but they are also used as an income-generating opportunity. For a fee, farmers can bring their harvests for shelling.

Peanuts are an important part of the Beninese economy and diet. Peanut oil is a primary cooking ingredient and beignets d'arachide are a tasty treat.
